Both events have grown from year to year. We are especially proud that this year the organizers and participants of both events came together to combine their efforts and thus build an even bigger community of people interested in protecting our environment and climate.
And while every person can make a difference for our planet – we are even stronger together!
This is why the combination of the EU Climate Diplomacy Week and One Environment is so special: It brings together politicians, artists, scientists, diplomats, journalists, businesses, and the civil society to raise awareness for the challenges our planet faces as well as to show what every single one of us can do to help.
This year the German Embassy in Abuja will sponsor (among others) an artists’ workshop about upcycling and repurposing of waste, movie screenings, a photo exhibition on the environmental pollution in the Delta region, a seminar on Renewable Energy, a journalists’ workshop about the Paris Agreement, a presentation on nature conservation in Cross Rivers and an ongoing radio show about environmental issues on Love FM.
The German Embassy’s activities in Nigeria fall into the greater goal of advocating for the protection of our environment and climate, both in Germany and internationally.
The breakthrough Paris Agreement on climate change was a key achievement of multilateralism, but there is no room for complacency. As we face new geopolitical challenges, continued efforts are needed to keep climate change in check and achieve our objective of limiting global warming to well below 2°C, let alone 1.5°C.
We believe that addressing climate change provides countless opportunities to invent new and better ways to produce and consume, invest and trade and protect lives, jobs, assets and livelihood opportunities, for the benefit of people and the planet. One Environment intends to give you just a few ideas how. The EU climate diplomacy week will focus more on the political side of bringing together our leaders in the fight against climate change. 2017 will be a very intense year for global climate negotiations. With the 2018 deadline for establishing a detailed rulebook for implementing the Paris Agreement, there is a lot of technical work to do.
